My foray into proper coffee training didn't exactly flop but I was assigned to the latte art instead of espresso 101. I turned out to be really great, Will the barista trainer/roaster made me a coffee while I waited and my other two classmates arrived. We all got bag of coffee of our choice (gasp) and we had 2 hours of hands-on practical experience on how to work the gigantic espresso machine and the awesome steamer. I really only drink coffee and Americanos black so working with milk was really different for me. We spent time steaming, feeling the cups, rinsing and wiping the spouts, and the best and most challenging part was pouring the milk to make a heart. I have seen pictures, and really never thought it would be difficult or that the density of the milk froth would be anything at all.....wow! I loved being behind the big espresso machine, but I sure felt like the first day of school and clueless about what to do first. Will (the teacher) was thoughtful, confident and patient with the questions and mistakes we all made. I really think this class opened my eyes and appreciation as to how things are done at a professional establishment. I have to say, Detour is a great place to take a class, get an amazing cup of coffee and get a beautifully artistic latte :)
The coffee I chose at this was a Detour Roast from Brazil, it's described as creamy, chocolate, cashew, orange...right? Yum. I wanted a medium/dark roast with full flavour, so for obvious reasons i am really looking forward to drinking this one.
The pictures of the heart is all me :) so fun!
